Charidotella er en slekt biller som tilhører familiegruppen bladbiller (Chrysomelidae).
Utseende
[rediger | rediger kilde]Små til middelsstore, bredt ovale, blanke, gulbrunlige bladbiller, ofte med gyllen metallglans, midtpartiet oftest noe mørkere enn sidene. Antennene er trådformede og middels lange. Kroppen er egentlig ganske normalt proporsjonert, med pronotum og dekkvingene er kraftig utvidet mot sidene slik at de vanligvis helt dekker oversiden, både hodet og beina er skjult under dette skjoldet. Med utvidelsen blir kroppsformen oval, sett fra siden noe kjegleformet. Et interessant trekk er at i alle fall noen av artene kan skifte farge ganske raskt, dette har å gjøre med at dekkvingene tar opp vann eller tørker.
Levevis
[rediger | rediger kilde]Både larvene og de voksne (imago) billene lever av å spise blad på næringsplanten. De voksne (imago) sitter tett inntil planten og det store flate halsskjoldet og dekkvingene gjør at billen kan være svært vanskelig å oppdage, og det er vanskelig for rovdyr å nå den sårbare undersiden. Larvene gjemmer seg gjerne under et tak av gammel avføring og planterester som er festet til den fremoverbøyde bakkroppsspissen. I alle fall noen av artene er knyttet til planter i vindelfamilien.

Systematisk inndeling
[rediger | rediger kilde]Den systematiske plasseringen av gruppen skjoldbiller er uavklart, den har tradisjonelt vært regnet som en underfamilie av bladbiller, slik som i denne oversikten. Mens enkelte plasserer den inn som en stamme (tribe) i delgruppe Hispinae, som tradisjonelt har vært regnet som søstergruppe til skjoldbillene, eller motsatt blir Hispinae plassert som en undergruppe (da kalt Hispini) av skjoldbillene.
