Megarthrus er en gruppe (slekt) av små biller som er vanlige i kompost og annet råtnende plantemateriale. De hører til gruppen bredkortvinger (Proteininae) i den svært artsrike familien kortvinger (Staphylinidae). Det er kjent sju arter fra Norge.

Utseende

Små (vanligvis 1 – 2 mm), brede, litt flate biller, gulaktige, brunaktige eller svarte. Hodet er bredere enn langt med små fasettøyne. Antennene ender i en svakt antydet kølle. Brystskjoldet (pronotum) er bredere enn langt, sidene er innskåret ved bakhjørnene. Dekkvingene er ganske lange, mye lengre enn brystskjoldet, og dekker de fremste ryggleddene. Bakkroppen er bred og noe flattrykt. Beina er korte og ganske kraftige, leggene (tibiae) er noe utvidet særlig hos hannene.

Levevis

Artene finnes ofte tallrikt i kompost og på sopp. Disse billene flyr godt og man kan finne dem svermende i solskinn.
