Glyphonyx er en slekt av biller som hører til familien smellere (Elateridae).
Utseende
[rediger | rediger kilde]Små (gjerne 3 - 4 millimeter), smale, blanke, brunlige smellere. Antennene er tynne, pronotum hvelvet med rundede sider. Oversiden er fint hårete.
Larvene er sylindriske, glatte med en voksaktige overflate og spredte hår, gjerne rød- eller gulaktige. Hodet er noe flatt med fremoverstrakte kjever. Det bakerste leddet har vanligvis et par kraftige utvekster av varierende form. Beina er ganske korte.
Levevis
[rediger | rediger kilde]Storsmellernes larver lever for det meste i morken, død ved. Hva de spiser kan variere – noen arter synes å være hovedsakelig planteetere, andre er rovdyr. Mange arter bruker flere år på larveutviklingen. De voksne billene flyr godt og treffes ofte flygende, på blomster eller i vegetasjonen. I likhet med mange andre arter knyttet til død ved er mange av storsmellerne sjeldne og truede arter. Gruppen Agriotini har larver som lever i jorda og noen kan gjøre betydelig skade på planterøtter.
