Stephan Eberharter vant gull i storslalåm i 2002, men hadde siden lagt opp fis-ski.com. Verdensmesteren fra 2005, Hermann Maier, var før olympiaden på fjerdeplass i verdenscupen i øvelse som ble ledet av landsmannen Benjamin Raich.[1]
